Courses on Science using Synchrotron Radiation

The following is an incomplete list of courses on scientific techniques involving synchrotron radiation. For additional courses, also check lightsources.org.

XAFS School

The APS XAFS School covers advanced topics in the analysis of XAFS data. The three-day program includes classroom lectures and hands-on advanced data analysis with Artemis and Ifeffit. The course is aimed at scientists with some experience in XAFS analysis and modeling.

National School on Neutron and X-ray Scattering

The annual National Neutron and X-ray Scattering School is typically held in the spring or summer at both Argonne and Oak Ridge National Labs. The main purpose of the National School on Neutron and X-ray Scattering is to educate graduate students on the utilization of major neutron and x-ray facilities. Lectures, presented by researchers from academia, industry, and national laboratories, include basic tutorials on the principles of scattering theory and the characteristics of the sources, as well as seminars on the application of scattering methods to a variety of scientific subjects. Students will conduct short experiments at Argonne's Advanced Photon Source and Oak Ridge's Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor facilities to obtain hands-on experience for using neutron and synchrotron sources. Travel and local expenses for participants are covered by the course.

Typically only graduate students from North American universities mid-way in their thesis program are accepted; applications are quite competitive. Proposals are typically due in the late winter or early spring.

For more information, see respective web pages at ORNL and the APS.
