Computer Recommendations

At this time, all of Apple's current computer lineup is acceptable and supported by APS IT. Your purchasing decision should be based on your budget and your computing needs.

We are no longer supporting PowerPC-based Apple computers and will be phasing out Intel Core Duo machines (Intel Core 2 Duo are still supported).

The only recommendations we would suggest specifically are:

  1. Order at least 8 Gigabytes of memory total. Several Apple computers now have the memory soldered to the motherboard at the factory making future upgrades extremely unlikely.
  2. If you are purchasing a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, we suggest you purchase an additional power adapter as you can leave one at work and take the other on travel.
  • For a MacBook Air, order a 45-watt MagSafe 2 Power Adapter - part number MD592LL/A
  • For a 13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display, order a 60-watt MagSafe 2 Power Adapter - part number MD565LL/A
  • For 15" MacBook Pros with Retina Display, order an 85-watt MagSafe 2 Power Adapter - part number MD506LL/A
  1. If you are purchasing a MacBook Air, please also order an Apple USB Ethernet Adapter (part number MC704ZM/A) or a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (part number MD463ZM/A)
  2. If you plan on connecting your MacBook Air or MacBook Pro to an external monitor or projector, you will have to purchase one or both Mini DisplayPort Adapters. The Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter is part number MB572Z/A. The Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter is part number MB570Z/A.
  3. If you are purchasing a Mini, it ships with a HDMI to DVI Adapter. If you wish to connect it to a VGA monitor, you will have to purchase a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter - part number MB572Z/A.
Monitor Recommendations

Apple now offers only two displays - the 27" Apple LED Cinema Display and the 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display.

  • The 27" Apple LED Cinema Display has a Mini DisplayPort connector ONLY. Make sure your computer has Mini DisplayPort output.
  • The 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display has a Thunderbolt connector ONLY. Make sure your computer has a Thunderbolt port.
  • The IT group also occasionally stocks non-Apple branded monitors that will work fine with an Apple computer. Please see the Recommended Monitors page
