APS Beamline Networks

Network Equipment and Upgrade Paths

This information is provided to communicate to the beamlines the configuration of the network as provided by the APS.

The equipment currently installed in each LOM at APS expense consists of:

  • Hewlett-Packard ProCurve 5412 network switch with a 691-Gbps switching fabric.
  • Redundant 10-Gigabit uplinks to the xray core network switches.
  • Up to 240 copper 10/100/1000 ports and additional capacity for a few 10Gbps fiber or copper connections.

Network Subnetting

The APS provides 256 network addresses per sector to each beamline. sectorThe address space can be configured as a single subnet or divided into four 62 host subnets.  If divided, each of the four subnets can then be assigned to the ID beamline, BM beamline, LOM offices, and LOM labs.

Example 1: 4 subnets, 62 hosts per subnet

Gateway Address Host From Host To Subnet Mask Broadcast Address
164.54.100.1 164.54.100.2 164.54.100.62 255.255.255.192 164.54.100.63
164.54.100.65 164.54.100.66 164.54.100.126 255.255.255.192 164.54.100.127
164.54.100.129 164.54.100.130 164.54.100.190 255.255.255.192 164.54.100.191
164.54.100.193 164.54.100.194 164.54.100.254 255.255.255.192 164.54.100.255

Example 2: 2 subnets, 126 hosts per subnet

Gateway Address Host From Host To Subnet Mask Broadcast Address
164.54.100.1 164.54.100.2 164.54.100.126 255.255.255.128 164.54.100.127

Example 3: 1 subnets, 254 hosts per subnet

Gateway Address Host From Host To Subnet Mask Broadcast Address
164.54.100.1 164.54.100.2 164.54.100.254 255.255.255.255 164.54.100.255

PV Gateway

A Process Variable Gateway is provided for each sector with the IP number for the PVGateway interface provided from the beamline subnet. Beside providing access to the process variables from the beamline front-end IOC the gateway computer is also the primary DNS and NTP server for the sector.

Distributed Server (dserv)

A Distributed Server is provided for each sector to provide primary DNS and NTP services for the sector in addition to providing Epics distribution through APSshare.
