Experiment Hazard Class 13.0 - High Voltage

Applicability

This hazard classification applies to all experiments involving the use of High Voltage Equipment. Other hazard classifications and their associated hazard controls may also apply to experiments in this hazard class. The inspection of electric equipment is covered under the APS Policy For User Electric Equipment Inspections. NOTE: Unless required Argonne training has been completed, users are not authorized to perform electrical work.

Experiment Category

All Hazard Class 13 experiments are categorized as medium risk experiments.

Experiment Hazard Control Verification Statements

Engineered Controls – Determined by review and results of a DEEI inspection of the equipment.

Procedural Controls – Determined by review and results of a DEEI inspection of the equipment.

Design Reviews and Equipment Inspections – Mandatory inspection by APS Designated Electrical Equipment Inspectors. Please read the details of the inspections. APS Electrical Safety Committee is available for consultation.

Training

  • ESH 114 Lockout-Tagout
  • ESH 371 General Electrical Safety
  • ESH 375 NFPA 70 E

Following the guidance provided in the APS User Safety Updates (February 16, 2005) and APS User Safety Update (April 12, 2006)

Signs and Labeling – Determined by review.

Personal Protective Equipment – Determined by NFPA 70 E criteria and evaluation of scope of work.

Experiment Authorization

Unless otherwise noted in the approved experiment safety plan, the PSC Deputy Associate Laboratory Director of Operations delegates the authority to authorize an experiment in this hazard class to a member of the APS Experiment Safety Review Board and resident beamline personnel appearing in the Deputy's list of personnel having the authority to authorize experiments.

Hazard Control Verification

The PSC Deputy Associate Laboraotry Director of Operations delegates responsibility for verifying that required controls are in place to the experiment On-site Spokesperson, Beamline Management personnel having experiment safety responsibilities, and ANL certified Electrical Equipment Inspectors.
